The Canadian National Vaccine Catalogue (NVC) provides a structured system to ensure consistent and interoperable documentation of vaccines used in Canada and internationally. The NVC includes two key subsets that utilize standardized terminology to facilitate comprehensive immunization records and international interoperability.

Tradename Immunizing Agent Subset:

  • Contains the brand names of vaccines authorized for use in Canada.
  • Includes passive immunizing agents like immunoglobulins and antitoxins.
  • Each vaccine is linked to standardized elements, such as:
    • Drug Identification Numbers (DIN),
    • Lot numbers,
    • Vaccine-preventable diseases,
    • Antigen concepts representing the active components.

Generic Immunizing Agent Subset:

  • Focuses on the generic descriptions of vaccines, including those authorized, discontinued, or never licensed in Canada.
  • Supports international vaccines through special access programs.
  • Linked to tradenames and key vaccine concepts like preventable diseases and antigens.

The two NVC codesets above have been mapped into NUVA as a single code set labeled as CVC. Originally these codesets were developed by CANImmunize and called the Canadian Vaccine Catalogue (CVC). Note on the CanImmunize website:

Important Notice: Funding for the Canadian Vaccine Catalogue will expire on March 31, 2024. As of April 1, 2024, the CVC will no longer be available to the public. The Public Health Agency of Canada PHAC is developing a new National Vaccine Catalogue (NVC) that will replace the CVC as a public resource for vaccine standards in Canada.
